Koko,

You will need protien to help you heal from the surgery and keep you from going bald.  I use AnyWhey from GNC and mix it in a cup of cocoa every morning.  I can not taste it at all, it just seems to make the cocoa creamery. You just have to be careful not to get the cocoa too hot or else the whey will curdle and not be good (I have done that and had to throw it away and start over).

I think that we can do anything we set our minds to do.  If you have the I will not do it mindset you probably won't, but if you get yourself siked up to the I will do it you will.  Everyone is different and there is a type of protien out there that you will be able to use if you will look for it.  Some folks swear by the Nectar, I haven't tried it so can't tell you about it.  I certainly would experiment until I found the right combination for me before surgery because you will not be able to get your protein any other way at first.  Good luck.

I could drink protein drinks before surgery, but after I could not tolerate it at all.  It made me ill.  I drank it as long as I could stand it, then I worked hard to get it from food.  The problem is right after surgery you will not be able to get it all from food because of your eating limitations.

However, now... at almost 18 months out I get it all from food.  I despise shakes.  (Or rather, they despise me.)  The one kind I could tolerate the best was from Sams and was called EAS something.  It was in a purple and silverish bag and was like $30 for a HUGE bag.  I only got it in chocolate.  But trust me.. Ive tried every kind under the sun to no avail.

Well, if you refuse to use extra protein, that is your choice.  But be aware that you need those 60 to 80 g a day.  You MUST get it somewhere.  If I don't get enough protein I get shakey.  Many lose their hair.  There are many things that can result from not getting your protein.

That said - there are MANY ways to get protein in your regular food.  Some of these aren't that band friendly.  You might have to grind, or mush some.  But it gives you an idea.  Your problem will be while you are in the liquid stage, depending on how long your doctor requires that.

  • Hamburger patty, 4 oz – 28 grams protein
  • Steak, 6 oz – 42 grams
  • Most cuts of beef – 7 grams of protein per ounce
  • Pork chop, average - 22 grams protein
  • Pork loin or tenderloin, 4 oz – 29 grams
  • Ham, 3 oz serving – 19 grams
  • Ground pork, 1 oz raw – 5 grams; 3 oz cooked – 22 grams
    • Egg, large - 6 grams protein
    • Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
    • Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
    • Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label
    • Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz
    • Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz
    • Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz
      • Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
      • Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
      • Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
      • Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
      • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
      • Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams

If you just don't like the taste, you might try mixing New Whey liquid protein with your water.  If you mix 1/2 a bullet with a bottle of water, it just gives the water a very subltle flavor.  I like the orange.

Ummm....my surgeon does NOT allow protein of ANY form, except from food sources!! I have never had a shake or protein powder or bullets and I am 10months out and feel great!!! It will all depend on what your surgeon requires!! The first 2 weeks post op, i was on prescription Optisource, which had enough protein for me to heal to get me past the first 2 weeks!!

My goal is to eat 21 grams of FOOD protein per meal and any snacks that I have normally has protein!! I put cheese on EVERYTHING for the added protein!!

before wls I got a variety pack from gnc and then graded them.  if not good dump it and try something else.  Cookies and Creme is the best.  Just try different types. I'm sure you've wasted more money on other diet aids.  I know I have.

Thanks for all of your advice...like I said I have not had wls..but my sister did, and she does not take the protein  .she has tried a lot of them but don't like them...so she gets it from the food  .

she is 2 months out..and just don't feel 100% normal...
Now Im asking myself if I want to do this...

I started WW again this new year...so we will see what happens..

                   Thanks again

I know it is hard.. but please do not compare with the experience of others.  I knew a couple of people that did not have positive WLS experiences, but I worked hard to put that in the back of my mind during my pre-surgery experience.  I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.  :)

I tried them all but hated them after my surgery. I could smell any of it a mile away. My husband tried to hide it in all kinds of things. I found it best to just make a bean soup and puree it and get it mostly from food sources even if I had to put it in the food processor. I did get some powder form in too. I found that some in pudding or cream of wheat was not as bad!

Good luck and remember that part does not last forever even though it feels like it for a few weeks! Just drink plenty. I got dehydrated and ended up really sick!

I'm not trying to be harsh...but:

If you "will NOT do it", you'll be in a world of hurt.  You'll do alot of things during the process that aren't pleasant, but most are temporary.  You have to keep the ultimate goal on the brain.  Not 'liking" protien supplements was near the bottom of my list on things that were unplesant (think male catheter).  If you are, even before surgery, thinking of skipping out on protien because it doens't taste good to you, you should seriously consider NOT doing this.  I'm sorry if I've disheartened you.

    Good luck.
